20/07/2009 - Sculpting History

A Leicester school celebrated its 70th year by creating a giant sculpture in sand supplied by Gibbs and Dandy.

A total of 20 tonnes was used by former teacher Nicola Wood of South Wigston High School, to construct a three metre high and four metre wide monument. It shows children delving into an over-sized school bag, which carries the number 70 - representing the school’s age.

The sand was poured into large wooden frames, before carving from the top to bottom could begin.

Nicola explained that she works with a rough idea of how the finished article will look. “As far as a plan or design goes, the sand moves unexpectedly so you can never really stick to a strict design”.

Head teacher Gary Toward was delighted with the sculpture and thought it was a magnificent way to mark the school's anniversary. “It's got a fantastic history and you can see a lot of the history being carved in front of you. It’s brilliant”.

The Leicester branch of Gibbs and Dandy was opened in March 2009 and previously traded as EP Builders Merchants.
